We are One 2023

Nestled next to the Des Moines river sits this 10’ x 30’ long tunnel. The design connects to multiple landmarks around the tunnel - above the tunnel being the Women of Achievement Bridge and next to it the Asian Gardens. The mural therefore uses women and symbols from Asian cultures to tie the landmarks together. The mural also highlights that everyone throughout the world is connected as shown through the characters holding hands. Protea flowers are placed throughout which symbolize diversity. The crane symbolism teaches us that we must strive for a balance to live in peace with one another. A tiger is included to represent the strength we have as a community when we all come together. A dove on the ceiling symbolizes peace. The sea turtle is added due it’s meaning of peace and patient strength in many cultures. And lastly, the butterflies included symbolize hope - a hope for a better future when we all join together.
